To my greatest surprise, LaTeX does not provide any means to properly typeset rolling r's. (OK, neither Word nor pages do any better, but this is hardly a valid criterion.) I am talking here about the ...

The answer to this is most likely no. But if someone with deep LaTeX or pdf-viewer knowledge know the answer to be a yes, then please do tell!

4.12.1.3 What does \smash do, and where is it documented?

https://tex.stackexchange.com/landing/r/newsletter?cta=question&id=424200

I see several users in this forum talk about \smash. It is apparently defined in base TeX.
What does \smash do?
For future reference, is there online documentation where I could find this?

4.12.1.4 Why the name TikZ?

https://tex.stackexchange.com/landing/r/newsletter?cta=question&id=424706

Presumably the "Ti" in TikZ comes from Till Tantau. If so, what does the rest of the name stand for? If not, why is the package named that way?

4.12.1.5 Is \string expandable?

I read the following sentence in TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout, in page 50:
The \string command is executed by the expansion processor, thus it is expanded unless explicitly inhibited.
Does it ...

I need to add annotations to large PDF file. The method suggested in this answer does not scale well:
